The coupled DEM-CFD approach is a promising alternative for modeling granular-fluid systems, enlarging the range of equipments and processes that can be studied with numerical simulations. Complex phenomena such as pneumatic conveying, granular drying and/or sorting, slurry mills and fluidized beds can be simulated and analyzed with this coupled approach.

Rocky includes both one-way and two-way coupling abilities with ANSYS Fluent. Moreover, Rocky's coupling approach takes into account particle shape when computing momentum and heat exchange between fluid (N fluid phases) and particles, providing physically consistent and accurate results.

In addition, Rocky's GPU and Multi-GPU processing combined with Fluent's CPU parallelization capabilities ensures that there are no resource competition between the two tools, which allows for bigger, more complex cases to be solved.
